The Community
Founded in the early 1970s by students of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the Sufi master who brought Universal Sufism from India to the west in 1910, this community is comprised primarily of members of the Sufi Ruhaniat International, the International Sufi Movement and the Sufi Order International. Many also attend who have not taken the path of initiation into a Sufi order, but who simply enjoy sharing in the activities.
What is the Sufi’s Perspective?
The Sufi’s God is the only Being that exists. The Sufi’s teacher is the spirit of inner guidance. The Sufi’s holy book is the manuscript of nature. The Sufi’s community is the whole of humanity. The Sufi’s religion is love. There is no God of any people who is not the Sufi’s God and no spiritual teacher of any creed who is not the Sufi’s teacher. There is no sacred scripture that the Sufi does not accept, since the Sufi is the worshipper of light and the follower of love. The Sufi strives to rise above the distinctions and differences which divide humanity.
The Sufi Sees the Truth in Every Religion
If invited to offer prayers in a church, a mosque, a synagogue, or a temple, the Sufi is ready to do so, knowing that all people worship the same God, the Only Being, no matter what Name they use. Yet the Sufi’s true house of worship is the human heart, in which the Divine Beloved lives. Sufism is a religion for those who wish to learn religion from it, a philosophy for those wanting wisdom from it, a mystical path for any who would be guided by it to the unfoldment of the Soul; and yet it is beyond all these things.
